Tacos. Simple awesomeness. These are al pastor and carne asada. I’ve been on a streak of eating street tacos.

Summer is here!

dear kathryn,

I went kayaking today. It was hot! Families and kiddos were swimming and picnicking. This weekend sort of marks the beginning of the summer, or at least it feels like it anyway.

As I was walking to the car, an ice cream truck rolled up, music playing, and the kids came scrambling for it. It made me smile and remember when the ice cream truck made its way through my neighborhood.

We would run to Grandpa because he always had change in his pocket. He would dig deep, open his hand full of change, we’d pick what we needed and off we went to the street. Sometimes he would get something with us. It was the best.

Sunday brunch last weekend with B and R. We had roasted golden beets, savory waffle sandwiches, and SHP made a frittata. There was rhubarb crisp in the oven while we ate.

Shipley’s (Houston)

dear kathryn,

so you know I went to Houston to visit Rosalyn and celebrate her dissertation defense. It was awesome and I had a great time. I met the family and got my official invite to the family reunion, which you know thrills me.

We went to Shipley’s one morning. I guess it is an institution there. You would have enjoyed. Rosalyn said it doesn’t hold a candle to KK. So I’m guessing you would like it too. We didn’t get there early enough to get them warm - which Ros says is the best.

The kolache are like pigs in a blanket but different.

My favorite thing was when Ros asked if there were fresh warm ones. the lady pulled up a cart and she had a stick that she wrangled the donuts with. She scooped up a few donuts with the stick through the hole and into a bag and away we went.

Since eating these, I’ve heard reference to to the kolache and the shipleys. so I feel like an insider now.

Grill

 dear kathryn,

Remember when it was in the 80s several weeks ago? It was wonderful, it seemed that spring had arrived. Well for that week or 10 days we dusted off the grill and enjoyed the end of winter.

I was at Whole Foods and I walked by these gorgeous stalks of brussel sprouts. I had to get it. So this was the grill before the meat went on. The stalk takes a long time to get just right. The sprouts were heavenly - tender and just a little smokey. We ate the leftovers for a few days. The boys at work were impressed with the results and there was alot of grilling & brussel sprout stalks talk in the lunch room at M’s work.

Lunch with Dillon

dear kathryn-

Its been a busy year for Dillon and I, with the best of intentions we tried to get together and it just never happened. So now that the semester is over we were able to catch up and have lunch.

Dill chose the place but I’ve had my eye on it for awhile so it was a good choice.

I ordered a mushroom quiche, which I thought was vegetarian but it had little bits of bacon. I’m fairly certain they get the eggs locally or in Michigan, at least. There were two layers of hashbrown in there.

Dill ordered tilapia, her plate looked gorgeous.  We were busy chatting so neither of us talked about the meal, but I think we both enjoyed it.

Dillon and I have desires to be farmers so we were talking planting and growing, chickens, and other exciting things. She shared with me that if packaging says that chickens/eggs are vegetarian fed that means they aren’t free range and able to peck around in the grass and eat bugs and other things. Something to keep in mind. I always thought it meant that they were fed the food but they could peck around as well. Good facts for responsible shopping and eating.

broder (pdx)

MK

Here is a recent visit to Broder with my colleague SD. We also met up with D Wahl who was in the middle of an around the country road trip and spending the week in Portland. Sweden will be his adopted homeland as of August, so Swedish food was in order.

Thanks to D Wahl for the photos

Broder serves breakfast all day. We had a trio of open faced sandwiches on brown bread with skagen shrimp salad, pickled herring, and pickled beets with chevre; a special of lost eggs with bacon and brussels sprouts in a skillet; and I think a baked egg scramble.

I should cook with bacon and brussels sprouts all the time. They were made for each other. I think I made my toast and knife dance, which is usually a sign that I’m very happy about what’s on my plate.
